The Union Pacific Museum is housed in a converted Carnegie library in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Proto Productions produced two major exhibitions that comprise the majority of exhibits in the museum. Building America fills the entire first floor and tells the story of the transcontinental railroad and its socioeconomic impacts. On the second floor America Travels by Rail allows visitors to experience travel during the heyday of railroads.
The museum makes use of Union Pacific’s extensive collection of historic artifacts. The goal for more artifacts to be on display was achieved with the fabrication of visible artifact storage cases. The cases showcase hundreds of artifacts, including Union Pacific's extensive railroad china and silver collection as well as a collection of historic guns. Special cases were built into the simulated rock walls of a railroad tunnel. UP Museum Outreach Coordinator, Patricia LaBounty commented, "We truly have the best of both worlds now: interpretation and context as well as an outstanding display of objects."
